Halloween Movie Snacks: Mike Wazowski Macarons

Sweets really just aren't my thing. I love an almost-savory apple pie or a barely sweet angel food cake. But when desserts even begin to enter the realm of cloyingly sweet, I'm out.

When I started thinking about this Halloween movie snack series, I knew I wanted to do Monsters, Inc. because it's one of the most little kid friendly flicks in the 31 Nights of Halloween lineup, and one my kiddos would love. I was frustrated when the first draft of this recipe turned into exactly what I hate about desserts. They were sick-y sweet. We made gluten free Oreos smothered in vibrant green candy melts and I could barely choke them down. When I thought about it more, I also realized I would never make anything like that for a real party, so I went back to the drawing board. I remembered that a local restaurant, Pangea, makes amazing macarons in lots of different colors and flavors, including my favorite, pistachio, again, because it's not too sweet.

I'm happy to say the final draft of this recipe turned out so much easier to execute and, in my opinion, way tastier. It just goes to show that using your imagination can often work out better than searching for ideas on Pinterest.

Monsters, Inc. is Veronica's favorite Halloween movie. She was in love with the Mike macarons!

Mike Wazowski Macarons

Makes 12

1 dozen Pistachio macarons (if you can't find them locally, you can get them on Etsy!)

12 large Wilton Candy eyeballs

Honey

Sliced almonds

1. For each cookie, find two small slivers of almond shaped like horns and insert them into the filling so they stick out a little, like horns.

2. Dot the back of a candy eyeball and place it on the macaron.
